Software Engineering (BEng) — York University
Offered by York University
Toronto, Ontario
Program Overview
About This Program
York University's Software Engineering program is a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) offered through the Lassonde School of Engineering. The program combines engineering principles with computer science and software development to prepare students to design, build, test and maintain complex software systems.
Students develop knowledge in programming, software design, algorithms, computer systems, operating systems, embedded systems, software testing and other areas involved in creating reliable software.
The Software Engineering BEng is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board.
Admission to York University Software Engineering
Ontario secondary school applicants require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U or M courses.
Required prerequisites include Grade 12 U English, Chemistry, Physics, Advanced Functions and Calculus and Vectors, plus one additional Grade 12 U or M course.
Applicants require a minimum grade of 70% in each prerequisite.
York currently indicates that Engineering applicants with averages in the low 80s or higher are generally considered for admission. Admission remains competitive, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer.
Common First-Year Engineering
York Engineering students begin with a common foundational first year.
Students study areas such as applied mathematics, physical sciences, programming and introductory engineering before progressing into their engineering specialization.
Software Engineering is one of York's available BEng specializations, alongside areas such as Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Space Engineering.
York's Engineering Program Guarantee can also allow eligible incoming students to secure a place in their preferred engineering specialization before accepting their admission offer, subject to applicable requirements and deadlines.
Software Engineering Curriculum
The program develops skills involved in designing dependable software systems.
Students can study areas including programming, software architecture and design, operating systems, embedded systems, digital logic, software testing and the specification and design of complex systems.
Students also complete hands-on projects, including a capstone experience that brings together knowledge developed throughout the degree.
Co-op and Experiential Learning
Software Engineering students can participate in Lassonde's co-op program.
Co-op work terms generally begin after second year, giving students time to establish their engineering and technical foundation before entering paid work placements.
Work terms can provide experience in industries such as technology, finance, government, telecommunications, healthcare, manufacturing and other sectors that rely on software engineering.
Lassonde offers flexible co-op placements that may last 4, 8 or 12 months.
Tuition
For the 2026–27 academic year, York University estimates Engineering tuition at approximately $10,600 for domestic students and $47,000 for international students.
The Engineering estimate is based on approximately 36 credits in first year.
Supplementary fees, textbooks and other educational or living expenses are additional. Students should confirm their actual fees with York University because tuition depends on enrolment and student fee status.
Career Opportunities
Software Engineering graduates can work across industries that design, build or depend on sophisticated software systems.
Potential career paths include software engineering, software development, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, embedded systems, cybersecurity, systems programming and site reliability engineering.
Software engineers can work in technology companies as well as finance, healthcare, government, telecommunications, transportation, manufacturing and other industries.
