BRIEF HISTORY
George Brown college was established during the formation of Ontario’s community college system in 1967. Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology were established on May 21, 1965. Hence, the college is named after George Brown, who was an important 19th-century politician and newspaper publisher and was one of the Father of Confederation.
When George Brown College was formed in 1967, it absorbed both the PIT and PITO and opened its Kensington and Casa Loma campuses at the two institutes’ former facilities. George Brown College also went on to absorb, in 1969, four former Toronto Board of Education Adult Education Centers in a third campus at 507 College Street and, in 1973, five Toronto-area Schools of Nursing in 1973, including: St. Joseph’s, St. Michael’s, Toronto General, Atkinson (Toronto Western) and Nightingale.
In 1973, a new expanded Casa Loma campus was opened. In 1976, the St. James Campus opened at 200 King Street East in buildings formerly belonging Christie to Bakery and Hallmark Cards.
The Hospitality building (300 Adelaide E.) opened at St. James Campus in 1987, the same year that the College Street Campus closed. Kensington Campus closed in 1994.

George Brown College three campuses; Casa Loma, St. James and Waterfront are all easily accessible by public transit and surrounded by bike lanes as part of Toronto’s cycling network.
The College’s student residence, The George, is located in the heart of Toronto’s trendy Corktown community, not far from the historic Distillery District. A TTC streetcar stop directly in front of the residence provides easy access to public transit, and our St. James and Waterfront campuses are just a short ride away.

George Brown offers more than 170 full-time programs in art and design, business, community services, early childhood education, construction and engineering technologies, health sciences, hospitality and culinary arts, preparatory studies, as well as specialized programs and services for recent immigrants and international students.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicant should note that the academic requirements for each program vary, hence make sure you are aware of what is required prior to applying. Should there be a minimum grade requirement, it will be listed in the course requirements; however, we encourage you to aim as high as possible as those minimum requirements may change the more students apply. Also, some programs require supplemental material as part of the application. You may be required to provide a portfolio, audition, attend an interview, pass a competency test, provide a resume, or have related work experience.
English Proficiency Test Requirements
IELTS requirement for George Brown College admissions is a minimum overall band score of 6 with no band than 5.5 in academic reading, 5.5 in writing, 5.5 in listening, and 5.5 in speaking tests.

International Admission Requirement
Applicant should attach all documents required in support of application but should not send extra documents that are not required. For most countries, copies of originals should be attested as “true copies” by the educational institution or by a notary. Applicants who are under 18 must also submit custodianship documents.
English Language Proficiency
Diploma Certificate – IELTS (6.0, minimum 5.5 in each skill band) and TOEFL (80 ‘online’ minimum 20 in each skill band)
Postgraduate – IEFTS (6.5, minimum 6.0 in each skill band) and TOEFL (88 ‘online’ minimum 22 in each skill band).
Degree Programs – IELTS (6.5, minimum 6.0 in each skill band) and TOEFL (84 ‘online’ minimum 21 in each skill band).
CONDITIONAL ADMISSION
Applicants from eligible countries who do not meet George Brown’s English language entry requirements may be offered a conditional acceptance for College diploma, postgraduate and degree programs which will be subject to successful completion of level 8 or 9 of George Brown’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program.
