The Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) is a bilingual military university located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. RMC offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a variety of disciplines, including engineering, science, humanities, and social sciences. RMC has a unique mandate to educate and train cadets for leadership roles in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and other government agencies.

Brief history 

RMC was founded in 1874 when the Dominion Government, led by Alexander Mackenzie, passed an act in Parliament to establish a military college “for the purpose of providing a complete education in all branches of military tactics, fortification, engineering, and general scientific knowledge in subjects connected with and necessary to thorough knowledge of the military profession.” On June 1, 1876, the Military College of Canada opened its doors to the first class of eighteen officer cadets. 

Campus and residence (local and international) 

The Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) is located in Kingston, Ontario, on a beautiful waterfront campus overlooking Lake Ontario. The campus covers approximately 42 hectares and includes a mix of historic and modern buildings. The College is fully residential, Cadets live together in a military environment. Cadets are responsible for the administration of many of the activities in their life at RMC. 

Single rooms are normally provided for fourth-year Officer Cadets. Other senior Cadets are allocated single rooms on a space-available basis. In the first year, Officer Cadets are placed in doubled rooms. All residences are co-educational.

Ranking 

RMC is consistently recognized as one of the top military colleges in the world. In 2021, RMC was ranked as the 22nd best military college in the world by Military School USA. In January 2022, RMC was ranked 42 in the latest Research Infosource; Canada’s top 50 research universities from RUY. The college secured 544 in April 2022 by Scimago Instructions and #3630 by Publication of Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities. 

Tuition 

Tuition fees at RMCC for local citizens starts from 3,864 USD per year. For international students, the cost of study differs from 7,500 USD. With the help of financial support programs, students can partially or fully cover the cost of education.

Admission requirements 

The Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) is a highly selective and prestigious institution that offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a variety of fields, including engineering, science, social sciences, and humanities.

To be eligible to apply to RMC, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in a subsidized education entry program of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) such as the ROTP.
  2. Be a current serving member of the CAF who has completed basic MOSID training.
  3. CAF members who have not completed their basic MOSID qualification may apply with a written recommendation from their unit or formation Commander.
  4. Be a released member of the CAF who has completed their basic MOSID qualifications as per Article 15.01 of the Queen’s Regulations and Orders (QR&O’s). However, there are some exceptions to these requirements. For example, a CAF member who has been released under certain circumstances may be inadmissible to RMC unless they have since been re-enrolled. Additionally, Term or Indeterminate employees of the Department of National Defence (DND), or another Federal government department, and spouses of Regular Force members of the CAF are also eligible to apply (see below).

The Graduate programmes offered by the Division of Graduate Studies may accept civilian students. Note 2 states that as of September 7th, 2021, CAF members enrolled in a degree program that is available to Cadets must complete mandatory athletics and language courses, unless they have been granted legacy rights by the Senate.

Non-military students are not allowed to enroll in these degrees without legacy rights. Additionally, any CAF member admitted to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Bachelor of Arts (Major), Bachelor of Science (Honours), Bachelor of Science (Major), or Bachelor of Engineering degree who does not have legacy rights and subsequently releases from the CAF before completing their degree will not be allowed to continue in these programs.

However, if they have completed basic MOSID training before their release, they may transfer to a Bachelor of Arts (General), Bachelor of Science (General), Bachelor of Military Arts and Science, or Bachelor of Military Arts and Science (Honours) degree.

General Prerequisites

An applicant for admission to one of the Baccalaureate or Certificate programmes must be completing or have completed:

  • High school (Grade 12) diploma at a pre-university level satisfactory to RMC with credits acceptable and sufficient for regular admission to a university in the province in which the student is completing secondary education.
  • The first year of a two-year pre-university programme at Quebec College of General and Vocational Education (CEGEP) and will normally be expected to offer 14 credit courses.
  • The equivalent to grade 12 high school or CEGEP 1;
  • Possess academic standards higher than those specified above; or,
  • Meet the conditions for admission as a mature student.
  • Quebec students who have completed Sec V will complete a five-year undergraduate Programme which includes first year CEGEP (or Preparatory Year) at the Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean in Quebec followed by university studies at the RMC Campus;

Acceptance rate 

RMC has a selective admission policy based on its entrance examinations and students’ past academic records and grades. The acceptance rate is 10-20% making it a very selective institution.
